Good day to all who appreciate the wonders of nature. Particularly plant lovers.

As we ease into our 121st year in the botanical industry, we wish to thank all of our past and future customers. Without you we would be uninspired to carry on with the tradition of bringing the best there is to offer to your outdoor spaces.

Many new varieties of traditional plants are continually advancing and taking new spotlights in the garden. Hydrangeas, roses, annuals, perennials, almost all species have been advanced into exciting new looks. It's the age we live in.

So as we welcome Spring 2016, remember, Wheaton Nurseries has been the choice for serious gardeners since 1895 and loving it!

What a Spring it's been!

Perfect for every gardener that ever was. This has been by far the busiest Spring for us in our 118 years here in Wheaton selling nursery stock to our friends and customers in the Chicagoland area.

Starting with the Spring symphony of crocus, hyachinths, jonquils and tulips, the overture of Redbuds, forsythia and flowering of all trees such as maples, amelanchier, 

pear, well you get the drift. And speaking of drift, the air is still full of intoxicating scents at the nursery here in Wheaton. Yes we were due a good year after the heat and dry times we have endured.

Speaking of the past drought and warm conditions we had though, many of our brave sentinels, the trees we have grown to love are suffering or have died this year.

The Ash trees have especially have taken it hard. There are preventative measures, but in talking to the Illinois state inspector it was suggested new and different varieties of trees  

should be considered to replace them.

Now on the subject of planning, the roses in your yard, you know, the ones that have never looked better, well without preventative measures taken now will be the feast for the Japanese beatles coming soon. We have systemic insecticides that are just sprinkled onto the soil that goes into the blood stream of the plants that will thwart them. Don't think roses are the only thing these creatures have their eye on, oh no, they also like grapes, red leaf plums, linden trees, tallhedge (fineline) and a few more plants. Application is easier than making a Margarita!

We have the best selection (no kidding) of flowers this year with all the potting soils and amendments you'll need for making your yard and grounds look even better than they do now.

Now to bushes and trees;  more cut leaf Japanese Maples have arrived along with Degroot's Spire evergreens, Umbrella pine, Tri-colored Beech, Crimson Fire Oak, Black gum, Parrotia, Foxfire Katsura, Varigated Oak, Weeping Alaskan Cedar, dwarf and regular Bridal Wreath, Blondy Euonymus and Burning bush trees!, Oh and this year we have Camperdown Weeping Elm trees in, you know like the one along Roosevelt Road in front our store in stock and a great size that will look like something as soon as you plant it.

Spring is here. Maybe not what we were expecting, but what should we be expecting?

Spring 2013 has never on Earth been here before. It's a unique as you or I. What will we see this year?

Well, some old familiar things for sure and of course exciting and rare editions to our nursery. Some of these plants we have had in the past but have not offered in several years. Large caliper Camperdown Weeping Elms, Weirs cutleaf white birch with a serpentine stem, Larger Blue Alaskan Weeping Cedars, Bonsai plants, Golden Cypress and many more.

We are also offering the year Kitras Glass gazing globes. Some of these glass globes are designed to be hung in your trees. They are like none you have ever seen before made  with thick heavy colored glass, see through, well you'll just have to see them for your self, they're indescribable!

Of course we'll be carrying amendments for your garden, organic vegetables and even organic chicken manure!

It won't be long and Mothers day will be here and we'll have it all together for you.

Grab a coffee, stop in, wander around,  listen to some mellow music and get inspired and go home feeling good.

Snow is here and spring's not far away...

Well the snow has finally arrived and I feel Winter has arrived.

I now turn my attention to Spring and wonder what it will be like, and more importantly what will Summer bring. But let's not get ahead of ourselves and return to the cold snowy day that's at hand all it's beauty.

I'm also glad we received the heavy rains beforehand, we surely needed it. Checking the weather data for over 100 years in Chicago area I found there is little to be concerned about. Spring may be a bit earlier now then in years past and overall a few degrees warmer during the year but no changes in leaps or bounds have arrived unannounced. Some years are wetter than others, some years there's more snow, but overall I see no need for the hairs on the back of my neck to stand up in fear.

Nature is something you have to roll with because it can't be fought. All that said I hope for a year that we can enjoy, relish, surmount and grow in. Enjoy the beauty of today.

Not all trees are the same...

You see them everywhere this time of year, popping up in praking lots. Christmas trees and wreaths abound but the difference is significant.

Nothing against boy scouts, but boy scout wreaths are made in Wisconsin. Many times months in advance. Wisconsin is the drier side of lake Michigan. That's because the prevailing winds are from the West and Michigan gets more moistier. Also they are made from Balsam fir, the traditional evergreen which smells like Christmas but dries up the fastest.

Our wreaths come from Oregon. Made from Noble fir gathered from forests watered again from the West this time, the Pacific Ocean. Noble fir is a long lasting evergreen after being cut. Once assembled by hand,  they are brought into huge climate controlled warehouses and await delivery by refrigerated truck to our loading dock. Roping and wreaths are placed here on the ground which has been coated with clean limestone and then covered lightly as not to allow to much or too little humidity. Mid season the roping is turned or flipped to circulate air and or to rehydrate.

This year we will again have Fraser fir from the Smokey Mountains. The smokey mountains climate is has the best climate for Fraser Firs. Many people carry Fraser but North Carolina has the best trees we've ever seen.

Face painting this Sunday 10/14/2012

Join us this Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM for free face painting for the kids! 

Check out our hugh selection of pumpkins, mums, tulip bulbs, gourds, corn stalks and fall decorations. Kids will have a great time too with our corn maze, garden train, and mystery trail.

Fall is the time for planting trees and shrubs!

Fall is recognized as the ideal time to plant trees and shrubs for several reasons

1. Plants root better and stronger in the Fall because:

A. Hormones are active.

B. Cooler temperatures.

C. More moisture from Winter snow and Spring rains.

2. Selection of plants is good because:

A. We are landscaping continually and bring in new stock weekly.

B. We are plant people.

C. We carry a diverse selection of trees, shrubs, evergreens.

D. Larger sizes.

Cotton Burr Compost

 Is your vegetable garden really ready? A new product to our area, but has been proven to be a boon to the Southern states for many, many years is cotton burr compost. It has twice the strength of either mushroom or cattle manure compost. It's acidic which will lower the PH of our alkaline soils, it holds moisture like peat moss and will feed your plants naturally for the entire season. Work it into the soil 6"-8" down, plant your veggies or berry bushes and get your bushel baskets ready for the harvest. If you have plants that are stressed or in decline add a 3" layer on top under the drip line (from the trunk to the end of the branches), and the rain will take the nutrients to the root zone. You may have to wait for a few seasons for the plant to turn around, but 9 times out of 10, it will.  You can find cotton burr compost at  a small garden center in Wheaton. I call this product chicken soup for the soil.
